From January 1, 2024, several fundamental changes will occur in drone operations.
The transitional period is ending, and standard operations in the Open category are beginning. Drone operations will comply with European regulations 2019/947 and 2019/945 EU.
Manufacturers are no longer allowed to introduce new products without a "C" class label.
Drones without a "C" class label that were introduced to the market before January 1, 2024, may continue to be sold and operated after this date. Drones weighing up to 250 grams can continue to be operated in the Open category - subcategory A1. Drones weighing more than 250 grams without a “C” label can now only be operated in the Open category - subcategory A3 - where larger safety distances must be observed. Alternatively, they can be operated in the Specific category.
For drones with a “C” label, there is an obligation to use a remote identification system (DRI direct remote identification) and in the Specific category. An exception is made for drones labeled C0 (drones up to 250 grams) and aircraft falling into C4 (models up to 25 kg).
Obligations of the drone operator with a “C” class label
Drones with a class label (C0 - C6) will be operated according to the table and with additional operator obligations:
- The drone must have a visible registration mark of the operator.
- Enter the operator's full registration mark of 16 + 3 characters after the dash into the drone’s integrated “DRID” system. Exceptions are drones C0 (drones up to 250 grams), C4 (models up to 25 kg).
- Have a declaration of conformity with EU regulation 2019/945 (usually available for download on the manufacturer's website). DJI available for download here.
- Have the EASA package leaflet (usually part of the product) available for download here.
- For drones, have an active and updated geo-awareness map system. Exceptions are drones C0 and C4, which do not have this obligation - however, the pilot must still check for any restrictions before the flight, e.g., in DroneView.
Obligations of the drone operator without a “C” class label, Specific category
Operating drones in the Specific category without a “C” label is possible if a DRID (drone remote identification) device is installed.
- The drone must have a visible registration mark of the operator.
- Enter the full operator's registration mark of 16 + 3 characters after the dash into the external DRID system.
How do I enter the operator number into the drone?
Entering the operator number into the drone's DRID system is usually done through software or an application that is part of the drone's control system. The procedure for entry may vary depending on the
manufacturer and model of the drone, but usually includes the following steps:
- Open the application or software interface used to configure and control your drone. (UAS remote ID)
- Find the section or menu where drone settings or configurations can be made.
- Within this section, there should be an option to enter the operator number.
- Enter the operator number you received after registering with the Civil Aviation Authority.
- Save the changes and make sure the information has been correctly entered and saved.
